FAQ

Solar geyser installations

1.  Why upgrade to a solar geyser?

A solar geyser uses solar energy to heat water and therefore has several advantages over normal water heating systems:

  1. Our customers will experience savings on their electricity bills.
  2. They are extremely low maintenance while providing hot water throughout the year.
  3. Our customers will contribute towards the conservation of our planet by not making use of traditional energy sources.
  4. An average sunny day in Cape Town generates ample solar energy to provide all your hot water needs without using electricity.
  5. Installing a solar geyser will ensure that you save money on your electricity bill
  6. Installing a solar geyser will serve as an investment adding more value to your home
  7. Solar energy is clean, renewable and environmentally friendly
  8. Installing a solar geyser will ensure that you and your family have ample hot water even during electrical failures

2.  How does a solar geyser work?

A solar geyser design is based on a collector container situated below a storage tank. Within the container is an absorber made of copper piping network with attaching copper pipelines at the back. The absorber is covered with a transparent plexi-glass (European standard) and insulated with an aluminum casing to reduce heat losses. The collector works like a miniature hothouse trapping heat that is transferred to the water in the pipes. Cold water flows from the bottom of the storage tank to the collector, where heated water rises to the top of the storage tank. A constant supply of cold water must be available, for which an overhead storage tank on the roof is handy to maintain the functioning of the system.

3.  What do I need to install a solar geyser?

A sturdy roof which gets ample sunlight will be needed to carry the collector and storage tank.  Water must be readily available and it must be possible to adjust the collection to receive maximum sunlight.

4.  What temperature will the water reach?

A solar geyser can heat your water up to 85 ºC.

5.  What occurs when the sun is not shining?

All solar geysers are equipped with an electrical heating element as back up, controlled by a thermostat – the system automatically switches over to the electrical system when the water in the tank is not heated sufficiently.

6.  How do I determine what size geyser I need to install?

The number of people in your household and their hot water consumption determines the size of the system to be installed. An average person consumes 45lt of hot water per day.

7.  What will happen to my existing storage tank?
If your storage tank is in good condition you could choose the conversion option where your solar panels are combined with your existing storage tank.

8.  What are the maintenance requirements on the solar geyser?
The maintenance of the solar geyser is minimal.
